Collection consists of Stearns's journal and notes. Papers include "Journal on Board U.S.S. Vincennes of the so-called Wilkes Exploring Expedition to the South Pacific," 1839-1840; "Notes on the Fiji Islands;" "Abstract of a Cruize [sic] on Board the U.S.S. Vincennes, Charles Wilkes, Esq., Commander, 1838-1839;" "List of Officers Attached to U.S. Exploratory Expedition;" and "Notes on a Tour from Nisqually, N.W.T. to the Interior of the Oregon Territory," 1841.

The United States Exploring Expedition under the command of Charles Wilkes left U.S.A. Aug. 1838, returning July 1842. The ships in the expedition were the Flying Fish, Oregon, Peacock, Porpoise, Relief, Seagull and Vincennes.
